First Place in Pieced quilts, Best of Division, and a River City Quilters Award!!! Wow, was I surprised!!!

I opened the PDF attachment to the email and very slowly scrolled down through the listing of winners in tons of different categories at the fair, scared to see if mine was there or not. When I got to the Quilts category I went even slower and read every one carefully. I actually covered my mouth with both hands and screamed when I saw my name/quilt marked First Place. Then saw Special Awards and the River City Quilters. THEN saw at the end the Best of Division!!

OMGosh! You can bet that I will be at the fair this year and get pictures of it hanging there.Pamelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12424757513396221897noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6495980823920113405.post-20523167472136234772015-04-12T07:45:00.000-07:002015-04-12T07:46:45.574-07:00Coming alongFinished the beige in the blocks and then the first border at the bottom. I couldn't decide what to do so didn't do the border at the top. I do that a lot... actually I think I do that on every quilt. Can't remember if I stitched between the blue and the beige at the top or not, I didn't on the sides. If I did, it will have to come out.

Just been living life, working, quilting. The usual. One of my last posts was about 4 quilts and they're all done. They should be, it's been long enough! My favorite is the Agave Garden in Patriotic colors. The inspiration for the quilting design was that I realized there were 13 stars on the quilt: the center star and the 12 stars that I added. So, I thought to do 13 stripes waving across it like a flag. You know, 13 stars and stripes. Every stripe has a different fill and took me weeks to complete. I need to get better pictures of the entire quilt that will show all the stripes.

Right now I'm working on one for my friend and his wife. It's a simple pattern, can't think of the name, maybe Jewel Box. The quilting inspiration was that it reminds me of water and sand. I did ripples coming out from the water and pebbles on the shore. Haven't decided about the borders yet but just 5 out of 11 rows are done so I have time to think about it.
Been going over and over in my mind about wanting a better machine for a long time. My current machine has been doing pretty good since I started using Magna-Glide thread and pre-wound bobbins and I've finished several quilts recently. Not my "good" quilts since I really need more skill to do what I envision.

The new machine is an Innova 22" with Lightning Stitch and it should be delivered in early February. :) I've taken down the old one to sell and got my sewing room all organized again.

In other news... I'm almost done with the Patriotic wall hanging. I know, it's taken a long time but I had other things come up like quilts for Christmas. Finished two of the quilts for my niece and nephew, all bound and done with matching pillow cases even. One more strip to sew the butterflies on for the other quilt and that can be sewn together.Pamelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12424757513396221897noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6495980823920113405.post-84574225552611332892013-07-12T11:01:00.000-07:002013-07-12T11:01:07.649-07:00Sewing RoomMy sewing room has been moved to the Master Bedroom. It's only me in a 5-bedroom house so I moved my bed to the next largest room. This room is about 15'x16' so the longarm fits nicely on one wall. Why not? It's my house and can use the rooms however I want to! :-)

The cubbies are Ikea Expedit shelves that were in the old sewing room and the boxes are by Semikolon and come in lots of colors. I have the larger 5x5 cubbie shelves, dark brown, in my home office that I'll use for the rest of the fabric. I hardly ever go in that room except to get something off the printer. It doesn't get a lot of sunlight so that will be good for the fabric too.

Feels good to get things organized in here though it probably won't stay this clean for long!

The front of the boxes have a space to slip a picture or something into so used fabric in a brown and blue stripe. Also made a hanging holder for patterns.

Now to get to work on the projects that are in the boxes...
Pamelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12424757513396221897noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6495980823920113405.post-28270886257750991552013-07-05T23:11:00.000-07:002013-07-05T23:11:44.627-07:00Putting together the Dresden Plate quiltAll of the "flowers" are done and the two strips between them with the leaves and stems are done. I am waiting on a delivery of more Bella Solids in bright white for the rest of the flower backgrounds.

The butterflies are fussy-cut out of the grey background fabric, a dozen of them or more, and sewing them on with a small satin stitch. I would like to quilt it in white, pink, black, and burgundy thread but don't know if my skills or my machine are up to that!

There is a motif in the fabric that I really like so I took a piece of it, scanned it, then outlined it using MS Paint. Will pay around with how much to enlarge it and make a quilting template out of it.
It was a really easy and fast one to make. This is the second time I've used a panel and found that it is not straight to the grain of the fabric. Is that common with panels? I had a heck of a time with the large pieces as they were really wonky just trying to cut them out.

What's in the works and what's finished? Well, a couple of tops finished on the Completed Quilts and Tops tab and a whole lot in the works! Three quilts for my great-nieces and nephew and a wall hanging for their mother and father, who is in the Army, and my niece asked for a Patriotic quilt to hang on the wall.

I have the Judy Niemeyer "Agave Garden" pattern but doing it in patriotic colors with some added stars. I took the blank outline from the pattern and scanned it, then used MS Paint to fill in the colors.

For the 3 kids I sent their mother a link to a fat quarter fabric site and asked that they each pick out a fabric they like. One girl chose April's Garden so I designed this for it.

The next girl chose D'Amore Sunkissed and I saw there was a quilt kit with that fabric at Hancock's (so I cheated). I ordered more of the fabric so I could make it a good bed-sized quilt and added in the stripe for a border.
The little boy chose Big Red Tractor! I found that there are some panels in that fabric line and another line that has 15" panel blocks so.... I designed this to use them.
I read that they're great for a design wall.

I haven't sewn the outer points to the center and I'm kind of waiting on delivery of a circle ruler that goes up to 17", which is exactly the unfinished size that the center needs to be. I've been reading the forum for this BOM and people have had problems with the center being too small so I didn't trim the dark blue outside ring to the trim line yet.

The star points have more of a green look than I intended it too. The green points exactly match the green in the darker points that also have turquoise blue, which is the color of the dark frame. It just really has an overall GREEN look. I guess I posted about that already too!! I can live with it and the next section that has a dark frame will be in the dark blue of the center so maybe it will all balance out.
Pamelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12424757513396221897noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6495980823920113405.post-69323591416639254992012-02-10T09:05:00.000-08:002012-02-10T09:05:45.612-08:00Little progressHaven't done anything on this for a few days, been too tired after work and now I have to work late tonight and this weekend. :-(

I'm wondering though if there is too much green, not enough blue, in this section. Maybe I should keep the green/blue dark print but change the lighter green to a blue. The outside fabric looks very green but it's actually a dark turquoise.

The second picture is more true to color than the first. It's funny how things can look so different in pictures. On the first picture the 1/4 circle is the same fabric as the light small circles but it doesn't look like it is. One looks white and the other looks green!
And I'm sure glad that I didn't trim the dark blue ring on the outer edge before putting it all together. It's a little off, a little smaller than it should be if I had trimmed it. I think the bulk of the stabalizer is the main cause of that since it is sewn on the lines. I tried a little bit to tear the stabalizer off of the center star in the seam area but it's not easily torn like paper. I'll try again since I'm not sure that I want to quilt through it and the seams are pretty bulky.

Started on the February pieces last night. I think I got all of the points printed that I need but the printer ate some pieces so I need to check that I re-printed everything that I needed to. I am using a LARGE roll of freezer paper so I have to cut 8.5" x 11" pieces for the printer. What a pain!! I ordered two 50 count packages of pre-cut printer sized last night since there is A LOT of printing to do. Those should be delivered Friday from Amazon so I can work on it over the weekend.

Trying out colors to use for the blanket stitch applique of the points. All those green threads look the same in this picture but they're not. The darkest green in the large spool looks to be the best. That is So Fine! from Superior Threads so will use two strands of it. I used Sharon Schamber's technique of putting the freezer paper pieces on the right side of the fabric, cutting the shape, then glueing the wrong side to the background with Liquid Stitch before removing the paper. It is pretty quick and easy and it sticks so well that when I had to remove the bottom 1/4 circle that I messed up on, the piece tore in half.
Pamelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12424757513396221897noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6495980823920113405.post-37539702185800256012012-02-06T11:24:00.000-08:002012-02-06T11:24:28.182-08:00The Quilt Show BOM startedI received the fabric that I ordered for the BOM last week and got it washed and dried so I was able to work on it over the weekend! I'm using Ricky Tims Stable Stuff and it's really not that hard of a pattern to do with paper piecing. The trickiest part was sewing the dark blue outer ring to the inner ring but with careful clipping and pinning it's just the awkwardness of sewing a circle. I haven't sewn the center star to the first border yet but I don't expect it to be any different (knock on wood).

I don't like iron-on applique so I used Perfect Circles to make the 1 1/4" circles and the large center circle. After doing a couple of them with the gathering stitches by hand I switched to the sewing machine and a 3.0 stitch. Just gather them around the Perfect Circle, press, spritz with starch, press, and remove the circle. Used a tiny blanket stitch to sew them on.

The outer points don't get sewn on until they're combined with the February pieces.

Pamelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12424757513396221897noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6495980823920113405.post-23393678829487683772012-01-25T20:08:00.000-08:002012-01-27T06:58:35.392-08:00Ordered Fabric for the Sedona StarI got out the fabrics that I have and other than 8 yards each of the seafoam green and the palest, water color blue, I only have about a yard each, give or take. So... shopping I went! First stop was one of my favorite online fabric shops, Thousands Of Bolts.

I got 19 yards of fabric for $102, and that's including shipping! Quality fabric too, even some Jinny Beyer.

I tried to kind of match the tones of what I already have so that I can mix and match, add some interest instead of every element being the same. On the left are the fabrics I have and on the right is what I got to mix with it.

It will be another week before I can start on this and I also ordered some Ricky Tims' Stable Stuff. Want to try that for the foundation and the applique.

Pamelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12424757513396221897noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6495980823920113405.post-3029070074060400042012-01-24T21:21:00.000-08:002012-01-24T21:21:50.524-08:00The Quilt Show BOM 2012The Quilt Show BOM this year is beautiful! I have looked at it several times and I didn't like the colorway of either of the examples and just wasn't in the mood to figure up something different. Today I saw that they have a blank one to color in yourself. I wish it was in EQ but I did a screen shot of it and opened it in MS Paint. I copied in pictures of some Hoffman fabric that I have for another project that I just can't get into and used the eye dropper tool to pick up the color and filled in the picture.

Now to figure up if I have enough of each fabric. If I'm going to do this I need to start now, hate when I'm so behind on a BOM.Pamelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12424757513396221897noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6495980823920113405.post-56056609804364285642012-01-20T12:23:00.000-08:002012-01-20T12:23:52.971-08:00Quilt done and off the frame
It took a few days to do this one as I was only doing a few rows per night but it's done and ready to bind and wash. I'm almost positive that I have some of the border fabric left to use for the binding but I might have to dig for it. I boxed up a bunch of scraps and stray jelly roll strips recently trying to get things cleaned up and organized in the sewing room.

I just don't want to do the hand quilting so I ripped out the 1/3rd or so that I had done and put it on the frame.

After thinking and drawing for days I finally decided to just do a panto on it. It wasn't going to show a whole lot of the quilting anyway and at least it will get done quickly.

I say that like it's nothing but that's still a bit of work to do.
This is the most quilting I've done on one quilt yet and the first time I've done quilting around applique. I am pretty happy with it though my perfectionist bent leaves me knowing that it could be better. I found that I actually liked the stitch-in-the-ditch more than the freehand work. Maybe that is a good thing for me because I admire the quilts I see that are done so well with ruler work and such perfection.

Tin Lizzie finally came out with a 1/4" foot! I kind of assumed that the foot I had was 1/4" but using a ruler showed me that it wasn't, it's smaller. That was a bit of a challenge doing SID, let me tell you! I ordered the foot even though it's highway robbery, the price they charge for it.
What's been in the works? Not a whole lot new actually. I finished the Faceted Jewels quilt and gave it to my daughter for Christmas. It turned out OK (my longarm quilting needs a lot of practice still) and I love the rich colors in it. Doesn't it look great on MY bed though??
I was really shocked, really. I wasn't happy with the quality of the stitches because of my machine but, thought I would go ahead and enter it anyway.

Pamelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12424757513396221897noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6495980823920113405.post-61446062305553087382011-05-10T07:37:00.000-07:002011-05-10T07:37:36.670-07:00Turned the quiltFinally finished top to bottom! I was so excited to take the quilt off and see the back. It's always a little apprehensive for me because of my machine often doing very bad quality stitches. I did find a few little loops of thread that I believe are caused by back-spin. I am using the teflon disks in the bobbin and I put a drop of oil in it. That doesn't seem to help any. When it's done I'll need to sit down and go over the back inch-by-inch and tie a thread onto the loops, knot and bury them.

Overall, I like it. :-)
It only took two days to get this far. Maybe I'll be done with it next weekend since I have a day job. The curved cross hatching templates should be here any time. I got an email last Wednesday with a question about my order and she said she would be mailing them that day. I had them delivered to work so they don't go missing off my porch.

Don't want to go much further without being able to do the cross hatching along the edges. The blocks meet at the top border and frame the cross hatching area so I thought it was ok to go ahead and do the first row of blocks.

I do have to say that it goes incredibly fast but I'm sure that's not the case for more detailed quilting. I saw a video on YouTube of Sharon Schamber with her latest best of show quilt and she said there was 1500 hours of quilting in it, took her 4 years to complete it. Just imagine... it would take 1 hour every single day for 4 years to do that.

It is surely a work of love and devotion that can never be repaid in monetary value. Most of us aren't going to get rich by quilting, maybe a lucky few (luck has nothing to do with it). There are many people that don't know the "value" that we put on our work and there are some who don't see value in it at all.
I kept going back and forth about using the light neutral thread in the circle areas or the cocoa. Finally decided on the cocoa since the spines of the feathers are mainly in the dark fabric and my not-so-good quilting won't be as visible!

I do like this. It's not the over-the-top quilting that could be done on it if I wanted to pay someone else to do it but, it's mine. To me it looks and feels free and flowing.... happy even.
